The credit file habits lenders quietly score you on

Nothing on your file is late, nothing is defaulted, and the application still comes back referred. Here is what is being read.

Credit Scores

Comprehensive credit reporting changed what lenders can see. It is no longer a list of things that went wrong; it is a twenty-four month record of how you handle credit month by month. Most borrowers with a good score have never been told what is actually being measured.

The four habits that move a file

  1. Enquiry clustering. Five applications in six months reads as shopping under pressure, even if four were declined and one was a phone plan.
  2. Limits, not balances. A credit card with a $30,000 limit and a $0 balance is assessed at roughly $600 a month of capacity you no longer have.
  3. Buy now, pay later accounts. They now appear, they now count, and a live account with a missed instalment is read the same way as any other arrears.
  4. Account age. Closing your oldest card to tidy up before an application shortens your file and usually costs you points.

None of these are moral judgements and none of them mean you have done something wrong. They are patterns a scorecard was trained on, and they can be managed with three to six months of notice — which is why the credit conversation belongs at the start of a purchase, not the week the contract is signed.

The most common fix we recommend is not paying anything off. It is closing a card nobody uses and waiting ninety days.

What to do before you apply

  • Pull your own file from all three bureaus. It is free and a self-check leaves no mark.
  • Reduce or close unused limits, keeping the oldest account open where you can.
  • Clear buy now, pay later balances and close the accounts rather than leaving them dormant.
  • Stop applying for anything at all — including a new phone plan — for ninety days before lodgement.

A file that has been quiet for three months and carries no unused capacity presents very differently to the same person's file the week after a car finance enquiry. Same income, same deposit, different answer.
